Education is the surest path out of poverty — but for too many Nigerian children, the start of a new term brings anxiety instead of excitement. The cost of books, uniforms and fees quietly pushes children from vulnerable homes out of the classroom, often for good. This term, our Back to School initiative set out to change that.
Meeting the need
Working across underserved communities, our team reached children at real risk of dropping out with the essentials they needed to stay enrolled: exercise books, textbooks, uniforms, bags and stationery. For many families — especially those headed by widows — these are the very items that decide whether a child returns to school at all.
More than materials
We have learned that supplies alone are not enough. Alongside the materials, our volunteers sat with families and teachers to understand the specific barriers each child faced, and to put encouragement and follow-up in place. A child who feels seen and supported is a child who stays.
The difference it makes
